Professor Sir Alan Craft

Emeritus Professor of Child Health at Newcastle University (MBBS 1969, MD 1978)

Professor Sir Alan Craft is Emeritus Professor of Child Health at Newcastle University. He completed a medical degree at Newcastle in 1969, and also went on to complete an MD in 1978.  He was the Sir James Spence Professor of Child Health from 1993 to 2007 and Director of the Northern Institute for Cancer Research at Newcastle University from 2007 to 2009. He received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the inaugural Newcastle University Alumni Achievement Awards in 2018.

Sir Alan is formerly a consultant paediatrician at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle. He is a leading expert in child health, and has been Vice President and President of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health. He also chaired the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges from 2007 to 2008.

Sir Alan trained as a paediatrician and a paediatric oncologist, and spent 25 years setting up and directing an oncology service for the north of England. The management of bone tumours in young people has been a special clinical and research interest, and he has been a leader of major studies in the UK and across Europe.

Sir Alan was a founder member of the United Kingdom Children’s Cancer Study Group (UKCCSG) and was its Secretary and Chairman. His work in palliative care for children with cancer led to him helping develop services for children with life threatening and life limiting diseases, and he has been President of the charity Together for Short Lives since 2005. He is also a trustee of medical charities the Bubble Foundation and the JGW Patterson Foundation. In 2009 he was appointed as Chairman of the Scout Association and as a director of the Medical Defence Union. At an international level, he has been involved with the International Paediatric Oncology Society as both Secretary General and President. He was knighted in 2005 for services to medicine and paediatric oncology.
