In 1979, Ann Cairns earned an MSc in Medical Statistics from Newcastle University before embarking on a varied and successful career.
Ann is currently the President of International Markets for MasterCard, a technology company connecting 2.3BN cards with a market capitalization of ~$100BN. She is responsible for business spanning 210 countries and territories, connecting over 27,000 banks and 35 million merchants
Before her move to the banking industry Ann worked as a research engineer with British Gas, carrying out experiments on gas pipelines. She was the first woman in Britain to work offshore on the platforms.
Following this she held senior management positions in corporate and investment banking with Citigroup, in the UK and US, culminating in the role of Chief Operating Officer for the bank’s e-business. Before taking her role as International Markets President for MasterCard, Ann was also the CEO of payments for the Dutch bank ABN AMRO, and the CEO of Lehman Holdings Europe through the bankruptcy process.
Ann sits on the Board of Directors for the biopharmaceutical company AstraZeneca.
Ann delivered a lecture detailing her incredible career to Newcastle University alumni, students and staff in November 2015 entitled “From the oil rig to the boardroom: one alumni’s story”.
