Join Newcastle University Retired Staff Association (NURSA) for a webinar with the University of Edinburgh's Professor Graham Crow

Join NURSA on Wednesday 20 October 2021 at 13:00 (BST), when Professor Graham Crow will present his recent research on the post-retirement activities of university academic staff via Zoom.

Graham recently became Emeritus Professor of Sociology and Methodology at the University of Edinburgh, having worked there since 2013, following three decades at the University of Southampton.

His mixed-methods study of later academic careers involved both surveys and interviews, together with analysis of obituaries and universities’ staffing policies relating to retirement. It was conducted in 2020-21 and funded by the Leverhulme Trust.

The project was framed around four questions:

  • What does ‘retirement’ mean, and what does it look like?
  • Is there a right time to retire?
  • How do academic identities evolve?
  • What support do universities provide?

The answers should be of wide interest, from our members who never really retired to those who made a clean break from academia, those who sought a new work-life balance after retirement, as well as to colleagues about to retire.
