Helen McArdle CBE Donation

Leading local entrepreneur and philanthropist Helen McArdle CBE donates £2.5 million

Helen McArdle CBE, who was born and raised locally in the North East, has dedicated her life to the care and support of people. She began her career establishing the McArdle Care Group and operated fifty care homes for over thirty years before 'retiring' and dedicating her time to helping others.

Mrs McArdle is a member of the University's governing court and was keen to support the research of the University looking to change the future of ageing. Her donation aims to provide further support to the University so it can continue to be one of the world leaders when it comes to addressing priorities for ageing.

In honour of her generous donation, Newcastle University has named the entrance and reception area of their new building, The Catalyst on Newcastle Helix, as the 'Helen McArdle Atrium', which leads into three centres of national expertise. The Catalyst is home to the National Innovation Centre for Ageing (NICA), the National Innovation Centre for Data (NICD) and the NIHR Innovation Observatory.

The first video to the right takes a look at some of the vital research being conducted by experts within The Catalyst, which is helping older people live better for longer. The second video below interviews Helen McArdle CBE by interviewer Angela Rippon CBE, in which Helen provides some of her own thoughts on ageing, and the specific research that is being conducted within The Catalyst's three centres.
