Newcastle University has a long standing relationship with Santander Universities. The relationship supports scholarships in a wide range of disciplines including sports, exchange opportunities for staff and students and enterprise education and activity.
"I studied my undergraduate degree at Newcastle and knew staying here was a good choice. The staff in the Geography Department are top of their field and offered the expertise for me to follow my research interests.
I wanted to focus on Latin America, so the Centre for Latin American and Caribbean Studies here was important in connecting me to relevant expertise and research.
I was awarded a Santander Masters Scholarship towards my Masters studies. This bursary has allowed me to concentrate on my studies and not take on too many hours of part-time work.
I have been able to use this extra time to focus on learning Spanish, which will help me to carry out my research in Latin America. Without the help of this bursary I don't think this would have been possible.
I was also fortunate enough to be awarded a bursary through the Santander Mobilities scheme. This is funding my summer research trip to Ecuador. From May 2016 I will be spending time in the capital city Quito conducting research with a charitable foundation.
I will be looking at human trafficking and working with young women who are receiving support. I hope to use this research for my Masters dissertation. I also hope the information will be beneficial to the charity I’ll be based with. I am excited for this trip and for the research project.
After I graduate, I'm hoping to take a year to get some experience working at a charity related to my interests. I would also like to spend some time in Spain to develop my Spanish language skills."
