Support Research Funds
With your help, we can keep driving solutions to cancer, climate change and more.
Help further our groundbreaking research
Today's world presents us with many challenges, but we're inviting you to be a part of the solution.
Newcastle University's researchers are working on some of humanity's most pressing problems. Your donation will allow our experts to carry on developing world-class solutions for positive change.
You could make a difference to our work in the core areas of:
- ageing and health
- data
- energy
- cities
- culture and the creative arts
Support our fight against COVID-19
We’re facing an unprecedented global challenge. Your University is working tirelessly to find solutions to tackle COVID-19, and we need your help to scale up our efforts.
All donations, large and small, will enable us to do more to help save lives and bring society back to normal.
Support our COVID-19 Emergency Research Fund today to help us:
- Discover effective drugs that help save lives
- Develop fast, easy-to-use tests to diagnose COVID-19
- Create a tool to help doctors identify which patients are most at risk
Never has the University’s vision to ‘advance knowledge, provide creative solutions and solve global problems’ been more vital. By donating to this fund, you’ll join a global community of alumni, students, staff and friends united by this goal.
Help us tackle three key challenges
The money you gift to the fund will help us grow our research in three essential areas:
- Discovering new drugs to combat COVID-19
The Newcastle University Drug Discovery Group is globally recognised for developing effective anti-cancer drugs. Now they’re turning their attention to COVID-19. The group is developing new drug compounds that inhibit the COVID-19 virus .
- Developing fast tests for COVID-19 (rapid diagnostics)
We are helping to scale up testing for COVID-19 and make tests faster. We’ve partnered with local and international organisations, including Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, to run clinical trials. The aim of these is to understand how people’s bodies respond when they’re infected with COVID-19.
- Predicting who’s most susceptible to COVID-19
A multi-disciplinary team is working to develop new algorithms to help doctors understand the risks of each patient admitted to hospital with COVID-19. This is so the sickest patients can be quickly assessed and prioritised.
Help us build on our success
The University has a track record of research success, and with your help we can build on this. We’ve already made big breakthroughs relating to COVID-19, including:
- Studies showing that cells in the nose have high levels of the entry proteins that the COVID-19 virus uses to get into our cells
- Understanding how wastewater in sewage systems could provide early signs of the spread of the virus.
All donations to the COVID-19 Emergency Research Fund will support urgent and important work in the fight against the global pandemic, whether supporting the salary for a COVID-19 research post or providing a game-changing boost to one of our priority research projects.
Support Life-Saving Cancer Research
Every two minutes, someone in the UK gets a cancer diagnosis. Thanks to brilliant advances, cancer survival rates have more than doubled over the past 40 years. But we haven't won the battle with cancer yet.
Despite medical progress, cancer still causes more than a quarter of all deaths in the UK. That's why Newcastle's Centre for Cancer is working tirelessly to deepen our understanding and develop better treatments.
Our centre is home to one of the largest group of experts in Europe. Their achievements span the entire spectrum of cancer research. But we need your support to go further.
Your donations will allow us to invest in a whole new generation of scientists. The more great minds we have working to understand cancer, the more we can do to develop life-saving treatments.
Help Tackle Climate Change
This year the United Nations warned that we could have just 11 years left to limit a climate change catastrophe. Our expert scientists are on the case – carrying out vital research to find new ways to tackle this issue.
Donating to the ONE Planet Fund is your chance to
- help drive the development of new, green solutions
- allow us to put them into action
Help us realise our vision of a research environment where internationally leading scientists carry out effective, interdisciplinary research.
Agewell
Here's your chance to support world-class research into ageing – helping us improve older people's health and quality of life.
Newcastle University has been breaking ground in this area for over 50 years, starting with pioneering dementia studies in the late 1960s.
Our vision now is to be a global leader in all aspects of ageing: including medical and care provision. However, we can't do this without your support.
Your donation could support research into conditions such as Sarcopenia. Sarcopenia causes sufferers to lose muscle size and strength as they age, hugely affecting physical mobility. The disease makes older people more susceptible to falls and more likely to break bones.
With further research into Sarcopenia, we can test the impact of medicines, nutrition, exercise and other therapies. Together we can find better treatments for this condition and help people live healthier lives as they age.
