You can enable talented Dental Science students to fulfil and realise their potential

Jimmy Steele

Jimmy Steele believed passionately in equality of opportunity. Jimmy joined Newcastle University in 1989 and became Head of Newcastle University’s School of Dental Sciences. Throughout his career, he championed students from all backgrounds. This campaign will honour the memory of Professor Jimmy Steele CBE, who recently died from a glioblastoma, aged 55.

Support the Jimmy Steele Memorial Fund today by pledging a gift. In doing so, your support and generosity will ensure that your gift can have a life changing impact both now and in the future.

By setting up this scholarship in his name and memory, it is hoped that Jimmy’s legacy will live on to not only to offer opportunity to future students of dental sciences but to inspire them, too. With your support we can make it possible for more disadvantaged students to follow a career in the Dental Sciences.

“We are really excited by the prospect of a scholarship being established in Jimmy’s name. Taking the step to start to study dentistry can be very daunting for prospective students from less privileged backgrounds. Embarking on a five-year degree with all the financial burdens that this involves can be too much when families and young people are already struggling. This kind of problem should never be the barrier to talented people who have a passion to study to be a dentist and fulfil their dreams.” Professor Katie Bushby MD FRCP, and wife of Jimmy.

Jimmy Steele built an outstanding reputation at Newcastle. He spearheaded the Independent Review of NHS Dentistry, which aimed to ensure patients received the best and most effective care possible. He was later awarded a CBE by the Queen in 2012 for services to Dentistry and Oral Health.

Jimmy Steele

''He touched the lives and careers of literally generations of dentists, and without the brain tumour from which he died at the age of 55, he should have continued to do this for many more years.”  Professor Katie Bushby MD FRCP

In supporting this campaign, you’ll help students to overcome the financial barriers that may discourage them from studying Dental Science. The scholarship helps to pay for textbooks and vital equipment such as anatomical models. Your donations will help reduce the need for a student to work, giving them more time to devote to their studies.

“The support I receive from donations continues to help me throughout my studies as I can work less hours, in my part-time job, and concentrate more on my university work and assignments. I am extremely grateful to those who support students and can't thank you enough.” – Laura, Stage 3 BDS.
