Newcastle Law School launches poetry competition to celebrate special anniversary

21 September 2022

Graduates from Newcastle Law School are invited to enter original poetry that reflects the School’s vision to be ‘globally connected, locally rooted and a compassionate community’ to celebrate 100 years of teaching law at Newcastle University.

2023 marks 100 years of teaching law at the University, and 60 years of Newcastle Law School graduates. The poetry competition is part of a range of activities planned to mark these special anniversaries.

The winning poet will receive £500 and see their poem displayed in Newcastle Law School’s Garden!

This is your opportunity to leave a lasting legacy at your former School and help represent the diverse and welcoming community of students and graduates that have walked its corridors for the past 100 years.

Rules and eligibility criteria

Anyone who has graduated from Newcastle Law School can enter the competition. It is also open to current staff and students. Your submitted poem should respond to one of the following themes:

  • Social challenges and ethical issues.
  • Celebrate women in law.
  • Make a visible statement about anti-slavery and the role of lawyers in this.

Submitted poems should have a title, respond to one of the themes above and written in English.

The winning poem will be chosen by a judging panel made up staff from Newcastle Law School and School of English Literature, representatives of the Law School student body and Law School Advisory Board.

It will be displayed within an existing brick-framed wall panel in the Law School Garden, which means there are some limitations on word count to ensure the poem can fit into this area. Please keep your entries to a maximum of 12 lines and around 40-50 words.

Unfortunately, we cannot accept entries which have been published elsewhere – this includes on social media, in magazines and anthologies, on a website or blog or as a solo collection, as well as TV and radio broadcast.

How to enter

The Newcastle Law School poetry competition is free to enter and opens on Friday 23 September. Please email your poem as a Word document to the below email address by 2 December 2022. Good luck!
