Professor Colin Rees receives new honour as a leading UK health researcher

Alumnus Colin Rees is Professor of Gastroenterology at Newcastle University and the South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust, and has now been chosen to join the NIHR College of Senior Investigators.

Since graduating from Newcastle University, Professor Rees has been instrumental in projects such as COLO-SPEED (the Colorectal Cancer Screening Prevention Endoscopy and Early Diagnosis project), a North East led initiative created to spearhead targeted bowel cancel research and bring its benefits to patients faster than ever.

It is in recognition of these and other achievements that he began his four-year term as a Senior Investigator in April this year, following a highly competitive selection process. Senior Investigators are among the most prominent and prestigious researchers funded by the National Institute for Health Research, which is itself the largest funder of health and care research in the UK.

“I am delighted to have been chosen for this very important role,” he told the University. “My selection also recognises the contribution of the fantastic team with whom I have the privilege of working. I look forward to helping to train and develop researchers and to providing research evidence that will contribute to our population becoming healthier.”
