Newcastle graduate crowdfunds and launches debut children's book

Budding author Will Hamilton-Davies has crowdfunded and published his debut rhyming children’s picture book, The Shrew with the Flu, illustrated by Jennifer Davison.

Congratulations to alumnus, Will Hamilton-Davies who's children's story officially launched on 6 October 2020. His humorous story empowers young children to be more self-aware, resilient, and caring towards the environment.

Hamilton-Davies, 22, from Chew Magna in Somerset, recently graduated in Journalism, Media and Culture from Newcastle University, where he penned the poem.

Having partnered with eco-friendly company Kabloom to crowdfund over three thousand pounds to aid publishing efforts, Hamilton-Davies was amazed by the public’s support for his book.

“I wrote the story as an outlet for me and a bit of fun for the family. I never imagined that children, parents, teachers and others would fall in love with the story in quite the way that they have.”

Will’s story is a rhyming poem about a shrew who struggles to find food in his forest. It explores concepts like self-awareness, greed and how to respect our environment.

The Shrew with the Flu was a combination of my intent to write a story that was both informative and educational, and my anxieties about climate change. After everything we’ve experienced in the past year, kindness and compassion feel like very important values to be instilling amongst families.”

Jo Newman, Headmistress of Clifton College Pre-Preparatory School said: “The Shrew with the Flu has easily become one of my 'go to' stories. It is thought provoking, empowering and has an especially relevant focus on the environment. There are so many aspects of this story to explore.”
