Scholarship Reception showcases student achievements

Our Scholarship Reception brought together Newcastle University students and our philanthropic donors, showcasing the achievements and benefits students have gained from donor support.

In this academic year alone, more than 1,000 Newcastle University students have received support through philanthropic donations. The Advancement Office was delighted to join some of these students, along with alumni, friends and donors at our annual Scholarship Reception on campus.

The event showcased the fabulous achievements of some of our scholarship students, and provided an opportunity for donors to meet some of the recipients of their generous giving. Student support through philanthropy takes a wide variety of forms, including prizes for academic performance, full PhD studentships, sports scholarships, scholarships to help students in financial need, scholarships for academic excellence, and awards to fund travel.

At this year’s showcase, hosted by Professor Anya Hurlbert (Institute of Neuroscience and Dean of Advancement), attendees heard from three current scholars – Karimah, Callum, and Ruth - who shared their stories and spoke about the impact that scholarship support has on student lives. Each of them have benefitted from different opportunities funded through philanthropic support. Karimah was awarded a scholarship specifically for students in Chemical Engineering, funded by an individual donor; Callum received an Undergraduate Opportunity Scholarship (available to all UK and EU students in need at the University); and Ruth became one of the current students to receive a Barbour Foundation PhD studentship, supporting early-career scientists.
