Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust – London Marathon Mile Marker Showcase

The Stephen Lawrence Trust announces the winners of a competition to design a tribute to Stephen’s legacy that will be a part of the London Marathon.

It is now almost a decade since the unprovoked racist attack and murder of Stephen Lawrence, an 18-year-old man who dreamt of being an Architect. The Stephen Lawrence Trust was set up in his memory to help every young person flourish in a society which treats them with fairness and respect.

Many things have changed since Stephen’s tragic death in 1993, though there are still many obstacles and challenges that disadvantaged students face. For this reason, Stephen’s mother Doreen Lawrence OBE set up the Stephen Lawrence Fund – a fund which asks UK Universities to fund two students through a fully-funded scholarship to study a BA (Hons) Architecture degree.

In February, the Trust and London Marathon Events Ltd announced the winning team of aspiring young architects that will design the Mile 18 marker for the London Marathon at a showcase event. The winners were Shreeya Radia, Quincey Haynes and Ayanna Blair-Ford, decided through a two-stage process where each team pitched their designs and received feedback. The competition has provided a rare opportunity for young architects to have their design built and seen by over 40,000 runners in the Marathon and millions more around the world watching the race on television or spectating.

Launched on Stephen Lawrence’s birthday (13 September), the competition to design the Mile 18 Marker reflects Stephen’s own aspiration to pursue a career in architecture as well as his love of running – as he competed in the Mini London Marathon in 1988.

Due to Government guidelines surrounding COVID-19, the 2020 Virgin Money London Marathon has been rescheduled to Sunday 4, October 2020. The original date for the Marathon was Saturday 26 April, shortly after national Stephen Lawrence day on 22 April.
