Winners of inaugural Alumni Achievement Awards announced

Professor Sir Alan William Craft Kt (MBBS 1969, MD 1978) and Michael Alderson (BSc Environmental Science 2008, MSc Environmental Engineering 2009) received awards.

Outstanding graduate achievements were recognised last night at the Pride of Newcastle University Awards with the presentation of the first Alumni Achievement Awards.

Debuting this year, the Alumni Achievement Awards acknowledge the exceptional work of former students who have made an impact on industry, society and their community both in the UK and internationally.

The Alumni Achievement Award in recognition of lifelong achievement was awarded to Professor Sir Alan William Craft Kt. Sir Alan is a leading expert in child health and in 2005, he was knighted for his services to medicine.

The second award, the Alumni Achievement Award in recognition of international impact, was presented to alumnus Michael Alderson, in celebration of his work on the natural environment and sustainable development.

Commenting on the Awards, Teri Wishart, Director of Advancement, said: “It was a great privilege to present Sir Alan and Michael with their awards and be a part of the first Alumni Achievement Awards. The Awards are a fantastic way to celebrate the phenomenal achievements of our graduates and give well-deserved recognition to their work.

“We would like to give thanks to the alumni who nominated their peers and pass on our congratulations to all those nominated, with special mention to winners Sir Craft and Michael.”
