£100,000 match-funding pledged to help more Newcastle students than ever

£100,000 match-funding pledged to help more Newcastle students than ever

1 November 2021

Alumni and supporters have the opportunity to double their impact on our student community this Christmas, with £100,000 of match-funding pledged by the Newcastle University Development Trust.

All donations made to the Newcastle Student Fund before the end of December 2021 will be match-funded by the Newcastle University Development Trust, meaning that for every £1 donated, £2 will go to help current and future Newcastle students.

The Fund was created in June as a legacy of kindness, hope and belief in the power of education, inspired by the generosity shown by the Newcastle alumni and supporter community at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, when requests for financial aid from students increased by over a third.

Christmas is a time for us all to embody this hope and kindness, which is why the University’s Development Trust will match donations pledged up to a cumulative total of £100,000 between 1 November and 31 December 2021.

Donations help future generations of Newcastle graduates in four key areas: accessing higher education; getting ahead in the job market; making the most of the student experience; and when times are toughest.

Lucy has just started a Master’s course in Fine Art, following the completion of her undergraduate degree at Newcastle University in the summer. She has been awarded a bursary funded by alumni and supporters to help her through the next two years of study. She said:

“Thanks to the alumni who support the Opportunity Scholarships, the decision on whether or not to carry on with my studies was made a lot easier for me, and I’m really looking forward to the next two years at Newcastle.”

Christodoulos is a Sustainable Chemical Engineering postgraduate student at Newcastle University and is a recipient of the Vice-Chancellor’s Excellence Scholarship, part-funded by the Newcastle alumni community. He said:

"Without the Vice-Chancellor’s Excellence Scholarship, I wouldn’t have been able to realise my dream of studying in the UK, as I wouldn’t have been able to afford the tuition fees.

"It’s changed my whole life. I was so excited when I was told that I had been awarded the scholarship."

Since the Newcastle Student Fund launched earlier this year, more than £185,000 has distributed to student causes across the University, from creating Christmas care packages for care leavers to funding tuition fees for students seeking asylum.
