Why your support matters

Sometimes the only barrier to students realising their dream of becoming an architects is financial.

In supporting the Stephen Lawrence Scholarship campaign you will help provide financial assistance for two BAME students to study BA (Hons) Architecture. You will be giving talented individuals a life-changing experience and the chance to follow their dreams.

We strongly believe that ability, not circumstance, should dictate a student’s prospects in life. Newcastle University and the School of Architecture, Landscape and Planning are looking to you, as a alumni member or supporter, to help the next generation of architects at Newcastle University realise their ambitions.

Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust

2018 marked the 25th anniversary of the murder of Stephen Lawrence in a racist attack, at the age of 18. Doreen Lawrence OBE founded the Trust on the principle that every young person should have both the opportunity and support to flourish in a society that treats them with fairness and respect. Stephen was passionate about architecture. His early sketches, ideas and photographs in the foyer of the Trust’s co-working and event space in London are testament to this.

Newcastle University are passionate about making this initiative a success, in conjunction with the Trust. We pride ourselves on supporting social justice. Newcastle is one of ten UK Universities to rise to the challenge set by Doreen, Sonia and the inspirational team at the Trust. Each School of Architecture will offer two fee-waivered placement bursaries on a Part 1 BA (Hons) Architecture course, enrolling in 2019-20 and continuing for three years.

We recognise the scale of the challenge in changing the profile of the profession and we hope that we can count on your support to help us to fund the bursary.

How your support will make a difference

Financial support whilst at university can make a huge difference. These are the words of Jacob, a current BA (Hons) Architecture student at Newcastle University:

Going to University was a larger risk for me than it seems to be for many people and I empathise with those for whom the risk is too much of a deterrent to study Architecture. The Financial support I received helps mitigate that risk and has opened up opportunity for me. Something that would not have been possible without the generous support I received from generous donors to Newcastle University.

By donating to this campaign today you will be supporting more passionate students, like Jacob, who dream of one day being able to inspire the next generation of architects.
