Confucius Institute

The Confucius Institute was launched on 18 May 2013. Professor Chris Brink, Vice-Chancellor of Newcastle University, and Dr Ma Jianfei, Deputy Director of Hanban, formally signed the Institute's agreement at a ceremony in Beijing in February 2012.

Dr Andy Law, Senior Lecturer in Town Planning at the School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape is thrilled to have been announced as the Acting Director of the Institute.

Dr Law's work sits between research on the history of ideas, historical imaginaries, collective memory, (including national narratives), nostalgia, the politics of history and the uses and abuses of history.  In his career, he has often examined the role of the uses of history and historical imaginaries in the production of architecture, cityscapes/townscapes, urban conservation and heritage. Whilst his early research explored British/English cases, since 2010 he has investigated Chinese case studies.  In this respect, in the last decade, he has become an enthusiastic student of Chinese studies (Sinology).
