Professor Tim Townshend says "toxic high streets" are causing health problems

Prof Townshend claimed that within Newcastle there are areas where life expectancy is years lower when compared to elsewhere.

Speaking at Gateshead Council's Families Overview and Scrutiny Committee, Professor Tim Townshend says "toxic high streets" are causing health problems. 

He said, "we do know where you live has a real influence on your health, there is a lot to do with socio economic status and poverty. Where we live, whether we live in a nice green environment, where there are places for our children to play, or if we live next to a busy road where we're constantly being disturbed, if the children are sleep deprived they can't concentrate at school. All of these things can add up to either a positive or negative influences on our health."
