Matter + Ecologies

ARC theme: Matter + Ecologies

Theme Projects

We are concerned with better understanding the interrelationships between people, matter and energy across a range of scales from the macro (city & region) to the micro within both natural and man-made ecologies and infrastructures.

Uniquely at Newcastle University we interrogate a wide range of design led experimental approaches from biology, engineering, architecture and creative arts practice.

Our approach is exemplified by our work on ‘Living Architecture’: the design, prototyping and deployment of active and responsive materials and systems across a range of scales, utilising a unique set of facilities that span from biological laboratories to large scale fabrication.

At the macro scale we analyse flows, processes and energetics of matter in complex spatial networks.
