Inspirational Women of Law Lecture 2019

Date/Time: Thursday, 14th March 2019, 13:00 - 17:30

Venue: Law Lecture Theatre, Newcastle Law School, Windsor Terrace

Inspirational Women of the Law 2019 celebrates the achievements of iconic and influential women who have a strong connection to the law, including legal practitioners, judges and campaigners. Many of our speakers use the law for social justice purposes, with work that focuses particularly on human rights. It is primarily an event for students (university and local sixth formers) but anyone with an interest in social justice and human rights is welcome and will find it of interest. Our 2019 event follows the highly successful Inspirational Women of the Law events in 2015 and 2017. This year we celebrate in particular the 100 year anniversary of women’s entry into the legal profession.

Our speakers include:
  • Brenda Campbell QC: a leading criminal law and inquest barrister at Garden Court Chambers, who was part of a team of counsel who represented the families of 77 of those who died in the Hillsborough Stadium Disaster and who has worked extensively in the field of human rights, both nationally and internationally;
  • Jennifer Gibson who heads up the drones and kill list protect at Reprieve and previously worked at the Special Court for Sierra Leone in The Hague;
  • Nadia Hussain, a solicitor at Greater Manchester Immigration Aid Unit and one of the first recipients of a Justice First Fellowship;
  • Dami Makinde who co-leads Let Us Learn and became an Eisenhower Youth Fellow and spent a year working for Sadiq Khan (Mayor of London) on the Social Integration Team;
  • local Newcastle judge Penelope Moreland;
  • Emma Norton, head of the legal team at the human rights organisation, Liberty, leading their Military Justice work.
