Nutrition and Dietetics Facilities

You'll be based in the School of Biomedical, Nutritional and Sport Sciences. The School is in the Faculty of Medical Sciences, which is also home to Dentistry, Medicine and Psychology.

Situated next to Newcastle’s RVI hospital, we’re one of the largest integrated teaching/ hospital complexes in the country. Our facilities include modern lecture theatres and well-equipped laboratories for teaching and research.

New teaching facilities for Nutrition and Dietetics

In 2020, we will move into our new state of the art teaching facility, the Dame Margaret Barbour building following a £30 million investment in a brand-new Teaching Centre, immediately adjacent to the Medical School.  This building will house specialist Food and Nutrition Facilities, including a high-quality food handling laboratory, food sensory suite and nutritional investigation rooms.  The building will also include a 300-seat lecture theatre, multiple seminar rooms, computer suites, additional study space, and social learning spaces for students to enjoy.

School Facilities

We have a dedicated Teaching Support Office, with a School Manager and twelve professional support staff. We also have a team of eight technical staff who support our undergraduate teaching.

The School has four large teaching laboratories and an undergraduate resource room. The University invested £1.308 million to redesign and refurbish two of our teaching laboratories (Labs A and B) in summer 2018. The new design allows for use of a single large laboratory to accommodate approximately 200 students in a high quality, bright and airy space. A descending dividing wall allows for two different practical classes to be accommodated simultaneously in the two laboratories.

Faculty Facilities

The Faculty Clinical Skills Laboratory provides a space in which our Dietetic students learn and practise clinical skills on their peers and patient volunteers in a safe environment.  Together with the additional consultation rooms in the Dame Margaret Barbour building, our simulation facilities allow our dietetic students to learn and practice the nutrition and dietetic care process before moving on to NHS wards and clinics.

The Walton Medical Library is located on the fifth floor of the Faculty of Medical Sciences building. It carries an extensive stock of electronic and hard copy books and journals relating to all the taught modules and the research of the Faculty.

There are a number of seminar rooms and classrooms in the Faculty. These are for small group teaching, accommodating up to 40 students each.

The Faculty also has five computer clusters, with between 20 and 90 PCs each, for the use of students. All clusters are open between 09.00-17.00 Monday to Friday. One cluster has 24-hour access.  There is also an undergraduate common room and cafeteria on the ground floor of the Medical School.

Students may work in one of our Faculty Research Institutes during their final year research project, where they have access to world-class research laboratory facilities and can gain hands-on experience of the very latest technology.
