Profile
After taking my degree at Kings College London I joined a small firm of chartered accountants and qualified as a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) in 1993. I then joined KPMG, specialising in corporate tax, before joining BPP, a professional training company in 1995. I was appointed the managing director of BPP Newcastle in 1997 and successfully established the new branch over the next 5 years. In 2003 I joined Newcastle University as a Teaching Fellow to teach on and assist with the development of the then ground breaking undergraduate degree BA (Hons) Business Accounting and Finance (Flying Start) ran in partnership with PwC and ICAEW which had its first intake in September 2002.
I have a genuine passion for teaching, specialising in the fields of financial accounting and taxation, and have been nominated several times for both the Vice Chancellor Award in Teaching and the NUSU Teaching Excellence Awards.
During my time here at Newcastle University I have successfully performed many important administrative roles within the Business School (including Director of Education for the School, NN14 Ba (Hons) Business Accounting and Finance Degree Programme Director, Chair Board of Studies, Chair Exam Board, Senior Tutor, Admissions Selector, Academic Lead for Education Enhancement and Employability, EQUIS/AACSB Panel Member, Academic Student Exchange Coordinator) and within the HaSS Faculty (Faculty Programme Liaison Officer, Professional Standards Advisor).
In 2018 I gained my PhD here at Newcastle University "Accounting for healthcare in the Newcastle Infirmary during the 19th century."

Writing a paper which investigates the changing nature of funding in voluntary hospitals during the late nineteenth century. There was a marked change in the nature of funding during this period and i am interested in the implications of that change on both accountability within the Infirmary and philanthropy towards it.

My main interests involve accounting for healthcare provision in the 18th and 19th century - especially within the Newcastle Infirmary.
I am part of the Accounting Finance and Business History research cluster within the Accounting and Finance subject group.
Esteem Indicators
£500 best paper award at the Management History Research Group Workshop in July 2008 for the paper, "Accounting and the moral economy of illness"
Scholarship Interests
Current work
Investigating the current student experience of our incoming international exchange and study abroad students. What works well, what could be improved and are there any lessons to learn that could be applied more broadly to the Newcastle student experience?
Main expertise
My main interests involve all aspects of the student experience - from course design, tuition, assessment and employment.
