The Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014, managed by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE), assessed the quality of research in the UK's higher education institutions. Our institute staff members were mainly submitted to Unit of Assessment (UoA) 5 - Biological Sciences and a small number of staff were submitted to UoA 1 (Clinical Medicine) and UoA 3 (Allied Health Professions, Dentistry, Nursing and Pharmacy).
Submissions were assessed on three main criteria:
- quality of research outputs (65% of the overall score)
- impact of research (beyond the University)
- vitality of the research environment
Overall our results were exceptional. In addiiton to being ranked 1st for research output amongst all of the UK submitted University biosciences departments (UoA5 - Biological Sciences), in the overall scores ICaMB (UoA5) was placed 5th out of 44 UK submissions (based on two independent assessments by Times Higher Education and by Research Fortnight (PDF: 79KB).
100% of impact of research and vitality of the research environment was judged to be world-leading/internationally excellent.
We are also very proud to report that other UoA in which ICaMB staff were submitted achieved 9th out of 31 in UoA1 Clinical Medicine and 15th out of 94 in UoA3 Allied Health Professions, Dentistry, Nursing and Pharmacy.
