Helen Atkinson

Careers Consultant

Background

Helen joined the Careers Service in October 2017 and is the Careers Consultant linked to Agriculture and Rural Development, Biology, Chemistry, Marine Science and Marine Technology.

She leads on internationalisation within the Careers Service team and works closely with colleagues in Newcastle University's international recruitment and alumni teams to enhance the support Newcastle provides international students across the student journey.  She created and delivers China Career Gateway, an extracurricular career development programme for Chinese students, which has led to Newcastle University being awarded 'Most Proactive Careers Service team' by Chinese recruitment platform Lockin in 2019 and 2020. 

Helen is known across the sector for her expertise in supporting international student employability and has delivered presentations on international student support at Universities UK International, ACGAS and British Council conferences and events in 2020. 

She is also a member of the AGCAS Internationalisation Task Group, which serves to develop and promote good practice in supporting international student career development across higher education institutions in the UK. In this role, Helen has contributed to leading research on international student employability, organises training events and produces materials for colleagues across the sector to use when working with international students. 

Prior to joining the Careers Service, Helen worked in the External Relations team at Newcastle University Business School, delivering the School’s award winning Global Experience Opportunity (GEO) employability programme and managing relationships with International employers and partner institutions in India, China and the Netherlands. Before joining the University Helen worked in Financial Services at Procter & Gamble (P&G).

PG Diploma in Careers Education, Information and Guidance in Higher Education, Warwick University (2018-present) 

BA Hons. Modern Languages, Newcastle University 

Level 4 Diploma in Professional Marketing, Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) 

Level 3 Diploma in Accounting, Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT)
