Get Ready...to Graduate!

Spend a day shadowing a graduate employer in the North East. Take part in interactive sessions to help you learn about your skills and strengths and find out how to stand out in applications and interviews.

Programme

Day 1: Recognise what you have to offer employers

You’ll take part in interactive sessions to help you: 

  • learn how to make a CV that will stand out to employers
  • understand your strengths
  • build your confidence and learn how to network effectively 

You’ll also have a go at a mock assessment centre group exercise - run in collaboration with graduate employer, FDM Group.

Day 2: Work shadowing day

Spend a full day work shadowing a graduate employer in the North East. You can learn about different career options available to you, make important contacts and find out what’s on offer locally.

Employers taking part in the 2019 programme are:

  • Mediaworks (digital marketing company) - the day will include an introduction to Mediaworks and a mini digital marketing project, which you'll present back to Mediaworks at the end of the day. Aimed at final year undergraduates of any degree discipline.
  • Nonlinear Dynamics (data analysis software company) - activities on the day will include attending the team stand-up and retrospective, and a hands-on, interactive task such as a group coding session, user journey mapping, planning and conducting a usability test, and evaluating code test submissions. Aimed at computer science/software engineering final year students.
  • Newcastle University Advancement (alumni engagement at the University) - you will take part in a range of hands-on tasks and work shadowing, including event preparation, communication campaign delivery, and record keeping using a complex database. Aimed at final year undergraduates of any degree discipline.
  • Penspen (engineering & management services company - oil & gas) - three shadowing opportunities to choose from:
    • engineering: including shadowing engineers, attending presentations, making calculations and discussing site situations. Aimed at final year undergraduates studying engineering (mechanical, chemical/process, civil, and marine/naval architecture), applied maths, and physics
    • knowledge management: introduction to knowledge management, including communities and technology systems. Aimed at final year undergraduates of any degree discipline
    • marketing: introduction to marketing and communications and then a hands-on practical task based around a social media campaign. Aimed at final year undergraduates of any degree discipline with an interest in marketing/communications and social media
  • W Communications (PR & Communications agency) - the day will include a range of activities, eg an introduction to media relations, and hands-on tasks such as press release writing and how to pitch to media contacts. Aimed at marketing, media, PR and communications final year students. 

Day 3: Put everything into practice and plan your next steps

The final day will bring you back to the Careers Service. You’ll spend the morning having a go at speed interviewing with graduate employers, then network over brunch.

After brunch, you’ll get into your groups to tell everybody in the programme about your work shadowing experience. You’ll also get the chance to find out about what happened at the other organisations.

You must be a current final year undergraduate at Newcastle University.
