Science Careers Outside the Lab: Environment & Sustainability

Environmental planning and sustainability are hot topics, with a variety of roles for students and graduates in this area concerned with the impact of people and industry on the environment.

Matt Dunlop, Head of Sustainability, Newcastle University

As Head of Sustainability, Matt is responsible for all aspects of operational sustainability at Newcastle University. He leads the sustainable development programmes on campus - delivering an outstanding estate for students, staff and visitors. His role also involves developing sustainable travel choices, improving cycle and electric vehicle charging infrastructure, managing recycling and waste (including hazardous and clinical waste), developing a biodiversity action plan and supporting implementation of sustainable design in construction and refurbishment.

Matt works to ensure legal compliance with environmental legislation across all of these activities. Matt’s educational background is in Environmental Science, where he holds a degree from the University of East Anglia. 

Laura Evans, Technical Advisor, Northumbrian Water

Laura graduated from Newcastle University in 2007 after completing a degree in Applied Biology. During her third year at university Laura completed a year in industry with Northumbrian Water. This allowed her to gain an insight into the company whilst completing research projects in the Asset Strategy department. After graduating Laura joined Northumbrian Water where she has had a number of roles mainly based around sewage treatment works issues and optimisation.

She is now working in the Wastewater Performance Team where her key roles include; sewage treatment performance improvement and troubleshooting, high level design of treatment works and strategic planning. Northumbrian Water is a water company providing mains water and sewerage services in Northumberland, Tyne & Wear, Durham and parts of North Yorkshire.

Karen Farr, Technical Advisor, Northumbrian Water

Karen graduated from her degree in Chemistry at Newcastle University in 1990 and worked in pollution prevention and environmental protection roles to protect water, land and air quality with the National Rivers Authority, the Environment Agency and Environmental Health at Wansbeck District Council and Northumberland County Council. Karen now works in the Wastewater Performance team at Northumbrian Water to improve the quality of wastewater effluent and assess how well the sewage treatment process deals with chemicals in the environment for the national Chemical Investigation Programme.

Jackson Smith, Environmental Designer, Skanska

I studied at Newcastle University on the MEnv Environmental Science Clean Technology course. As part of my degree I spent a year in industry at British fashion brand Barbour, focussing on sustainable fashion and packaging. My current role at Skanska requires me to assess the environmental impact of all upcoming infrastructure projects in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough. This involves exploring the suitability of sites for developments, mitigating impact and ensuring developments are socially and environmentally responsible. My role allows me to combine my passion for the environment with business, leadership and sustainability.
