Centre for Bacterial Cell Biology

Staff Profile

Dr Bernhard Kepplinger

Research Associate

Background

I am originally from Austria where I completed my undergraduate in Biomedicine and Biotechnology at the Veterinary University of Vienna. I subsequently moved to Newcastle where I completed a MSc in Drug Discovery. I completed my doctoral training in the Newcastle University spin off company Demuris, which focuses on antibiotic discovery from filamentous bacteria. Since 2016 I work in the research group of Prof. Errington.

Areas of expertise

  • Drug discovery
  • Purification of small molecules
  • Genetics
  • Cell morphogenesis of Streptomyces

Research

My main research focuses on growth, development and antibiotic product of actinomycetes. I am particularly interested in chemical genetics. I use specialized metabolites purified from actinomycetes to target pathways in the model organism B. subtilis.

I am further particularly interested in cell morphogenesis of Streptomyces.

Teaching

I am supervising Master students during their lab-based projects. I always look forward to work with dedicated students.
