Study with Us

The education and research training of early career clinical and non-clinical academics is a key element of the COHR mission. We aim to provide a research experience that is challenging, engaging and equals the career aspirations of our students.

Our research is led by internationally recognised experts with a vast experience in research supervision and project management.

We have a dynamic research environment underpinned by world-class research facilities.

Learning environment

Our oral health research activity is wide ranging and has important links to other medical sciences.

We are committed to translating our internationally recognised scientific research excellence into practice.

Students benefit from our strong connections with Faculty of Medical Sciences Research Institutes and Centres, including:

  • the Biosciences Research Institute
  • the Translational and Clinical Research Institute
  • the Population Health Sciences Research Institute
  • joint NIHR/University programmes, such as the NIHR Newcastle Biomedical Research Centre

These collaborations ensure access to the best possible expertise and facilities.

Rich research community

We are justifiably proud of our rich and diverse research community within the COHR. This includes UK, EU and international students engaged in a wide range of research programmes which we offer.

Undergraduate and Masters

We supervise undergraduate BSc students in Biomedical Sciences as well as postgraduate Masters students in Medical and Dental Sciences (MRes and MSc).

The COHR has an established national reputation for providing higher level research training to both clinical and non-clinical scientists.

Postgraduate Dentists studying for the Restorative Dentistry MClinDent engage in a research project within the COHR.

PhD programmes

Our community of PhD students benefit from participation in the comprehensive Faculty of Medical Sciences Graduate training programme.

They have the opportunity to conduct full-time research within our research themes.

Our success rate in obtaining externally funded pre-doctoral, doctoral and translational fellowships for early career dental scientists is second to none.

We offer the opportunity to support applications to Faculty and University fellowship schemes as well as those to external bodies such as the NIHR.

Many of our previous Fellows have now progressed to senior academic positions within Dental Schools worldwide.
