SAVE ME - System and Actions to support Disaster Mitigation and Evacuation

The Human-Computer interaction group is developing location tracking and guidance systems for tunnels and bridges. This involves both the development of novel hardware and new algorithms for ad hoc localisation. SAVE ME aims to develop a system that detects disaster events in public transport terminals / vehicles and critical infrastructures (i.e. tunnels and bridges) and supports quick and optimal mass evacuation guidance, to save the lives of the general public and the rescuers, giving particular emphasis to the most vulnerable travelers. In in order to evaluate the final system's reliability and usability the project includes the installation and testing of a prototype system in an underground station and metro vehicles in Newcastle and in the Gotthard tunnel in Switzerland.
