Class of 2020

Rescheduled ceremonies for all students who graduated during 2020

We are very excited to be welcoming back the Class of 2020 for in-person congregation ceremonies this November.

Dates & Schedule

The rescheduled ceremonies for 2020 graduates will take place between Monday 8 November to Saturday 13 November 2021.

Although we hope that as many as possible of our amazing Class of 2020 will come back to campus to enjoy their ceremony, we know that it may not be feasible for everyone and that some of you may have other commitments. This means that we are unable to accurately estimate how many graduates from each subject area will place a booking.

Therefore, to ensure that we can create the best graduation experience as possible, the ceremony schedule will only be confirmed once the booking period has closed. The confirmed date/time of your ceremony will be sent to you on Thursday 30 September 2021.

What to expect

The congregation ceremonies will take place in the King’s Hall, Armstrong Building and will follow the format of our traditional ceremonies. The venue is historic and intimate and we will therefore need to take some safety precautions to enable us to hold the ceremonies as safely as possible. These precautions include:

  • Graduates/guests will be required to wear a face mask during the ceremony (unless exempt). Graduates will be able to temporarily remove their mask when approaching/crossing the stage.
  • Graduates will place their own hood before the ceremony (rather than having it placed over them within the ceremony) and will acknowledge the Presiding Officer with a nod of the head rather than a handshake.

Further safety information about the ceremonies is available below.

Booking

If you would like to attend, please complete the booking form using the link sent to you via email on 14 September. When completing the form, you will also be required to order and pay for your gown hire.

Bookings will open on Tuesday 14 September and close on Monday 27 September.

A full refund for your gown hire will be provided if you are unable to attend your ceremony once the date/time has been confirmed on 30 September.

Tickets/Guests

Each graduate is able to bring up to 2 guests with them to the ceremony. The graduate and 2 guest tickets are provided free of charge.

For any guests who are unable to attend, please be aware that ceremonies will be available to view live on our website. A recording of the ceremony will also be available to view on demand soon after the ceremony.

Babies and children:

Although we wish to make congregations as welcoming and inclusive as possible, the formal nature and duration of the ceremonies may make them unsuitable for babies and young children. Due to fire regulations, please be aware that all children (including babies) require a guest ticket.

Visa invitation letter:

If you need an invitation letter to your ceremony, to support a visa application for you or your guests, complete the visa letter request form.

Hardship Support

We do not want any graduate to be put off attending their congregation ceremony due to financial concerns. If you think that you may struggle to meet the costs associated with the day (e.g., if you are unemployed or perhaps still in higher education), then we may be able to provide some assistance in relation to travel costs. Please contact congregations@ncl.ac.uk to find out more.

Student Orators

We appoint one Student Orator for each congregation ceremony to deliver a short speech on behalf of the graduating cohort. If you are interested in applying for this role, you can find more information here
