Agriculture and Food

Overview

Agriculture and Food is one of our 10 main research themes. Find out about what we do, and which members of staff are involved.

The world faces huge challenges in meeting food, water, energy and environmental demands. These are imposed by a growing population projected to reach nine billion by 2050.

Food productivity must increase by 70%. At the same time we must combat poverty and hunger.

Moreover, these demands must be met in an economically viable and sustainable fashion. They must preserve biodiversity and health.

Our research

Synthetic Biology offers new solutions to these problems. It has the potential to develop new crops that:

  • use less water, pesticides and fertilizer
  • are more resistant to air and soil pollutants
  • produce less carbon dioxide
  • are produced more efficiently
