Clinical Trials in Newcastle

The Cellular Therapies Facility is proud to be part of the partnership between Newcastle University and the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

The University and Trust together have significant experience in delivering cell therapy trials and an excellent track record of recruiting patients.

Newcastle Hospitals is committed to providing the best possible healthcare from two large hospitals in the city - the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI), including the Great North Children's Hospital, and the Freeman Hospital.

The Hospitals combine excellent day-to-day patient care with world-leading innovation and research and are recognised nationally as centres of healthcare excellence:

  • Newcastle Hospitals has been in the top 10 hospitals for 11 consecutive years by CHKS
  • over 30% of patients come from outside Tyne & Wear to access services
  • Newcastle has more specialist children's services than any other Trust outside of London

Newcastle Hospitals is at the forefront of healthcare in many specialist areas. For example, the Freeman Hospital has an international reputation for leading edge transplant surgery for both adults and children. Europe's first successful heart transplant for a child was performed in 1987, and the first dual lung transplants were also undertaken at The Freeman.

The Great North Children's Hospital has one of only two "bubble units" in the UK, where children with severe immune system problems are treated in a special air-tight isolation ward.

The UK's first Institute of Transplantation opened in 2011 bringing together transplant teams for all major organs.

Testimonial

The team at Newcastle have an extremely refreshing approach to setting up and conducting commercial clinical research. In my mind the key success factors are:

  • an awareness of industry needs and a keeness to deliver on these in a timely and consistent manner
  • a willingness to work closely with industry, cut through red tape and remain flexible at all times in order to get new research projects up and running
  • provision of appropriate resource and therefore an efficient service to industry
