Background

Introduction

From 2017 - 2019 I was an NIHR Academic Clinical Fellow and Speciality Trainee in Special Care Dentistry. Alongside my academic role, I provided clinical care at Newcastle Dental Hospital and the Community Dental Services within the North East. I have previously undertaken a range of Dental Core Training posts including posts in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and General Dental Practice.

As of 2020 I am undertaking a PhD as part of an NIHR Doctoral Research Fellowship alongside maintaining my clinical practice as a Senior Dental Officer with North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust.

My research interests are currently focused on improving dental treatment for patients seen in Community or Specialist Dental Services. In particular, I am involved in research aiming to enhance decision-making for older people, particularly those living with dementia or other forms of cognitive impairment. I

Enhancing Treatment Decisions for People Living with Dementia and Oral Diseases

The limitations in research evidence specific to people living with dementia means that treatment planning challenging for people who may be unwell, anxious or have cognitive impairment can be highly complex. This project aims to develop and test an approach to help people living with dementia, families/carers and dentists to make decisions together about providing dental treatment. This project is being supported by research collaboration within the Population Health Sciences Institute and will form the basis of my PhD, funded by NIHR, commencing in 2020.
