Background

Introduction

  • I completed my BDS at the University of Edinburgh before returning to my native north-east to undertake junior hospital and university appointments followed by 3 years as an Associate in general dental practice.
  • Returning to the University at Newcastle as a Clinical Research Associate I completed my PhD in 1992 with a study of the dental effects of the use of sugars-containing medication in chronically sick children.
  • Initially as a Clinical Lecturer then Senior Clinical Lecturer in Child Dental Health and since 2013 as Professor (Clinical) of Preventive Dentistry as well as a Specialist in Paediatric Dentistry and now in retirement since January 2020, I maintain an active research interest in the prevention and management of dental caries and the use of fluorides, particularly in relation to fluoride exposure.

Research Interests

  • Fluorides and dental fluorosis, including fluoride biomarkers and the genetics of fluoride metabolism 
  • Preventing and managing dental caries in children

Fluoride research:

  • Total fluoride exposure in children and adults,
  • Fluoride intake, excretion and metabolism,
  • Development of standard methods of fluoride analysis of biological and non-biological samples,
  • Development of biomarkers for monitoring fluoride exposure in individuals and communities,
  • Dental fluorosis

Preventing and managing dental caries in children:

  • I was Joint Chief Investigator and local Clinical Lead for FiCTION; an NIHR-HTA funded multi-centre primary dental care based RCT, published in January 2020 which aimed to determine the best way of managing decay in childrens' primary teeth.
