Emeritus Professor Peter Heasman

Background

Peter Heasman is emeritus Professor of Periodontolgy at the School of Dental Sciences in the Faculty of Medical Sciences, Newcastle University. He is formerly Honorary Consultant in Restorative Dentistry in the Newcastle Hospitals’ Trust. Professor Heasman’s research focussed on pharmaceutical developments used in the treatment of periodontal diseases, and his teaching of periodontology and restorative dentistry was delivered at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.


He was President of the British Society of Periodontology in 2013-14 and awarded honorary life membership of the Society in 2017.

Away from dentistry, Professor Heasman was Chair of both the Newcastle and York Research Ethics Committees between 2000-2017. He contributed significantly to training in, and governance of national esearch ethics for the Health Research Authority for which he received the British Empire Medal in the 2017, New Year’s Honours list.
