Digital Institute

Our goal is to transform Newcastle's research and its impact on society. We have particular strengths in Cloud Computing & Data Analytics which we apply to extract knowledge from the vast amounts of data now being collected in all research fields and industrial sectors.

Our work spans research, teaching and innovation through engagement with external organisations.

Our three primary aims are to:

  • disseminate research information: documenting and publicising work from across the University
  • create and support multi-disciplinary collaborations
  • act as a front-door for potential collaborators, both internal and external

Our expertise ranges from cloud computing and 'big data' to visualisation and the internet of things. We draw upon our areas of established research excellence and the experience of our collaborators to design and harness digital technologies to enable novel, innovative research. Our research strength has resulted in over £100m in research income over the past 15 years, from both industry and the UK research councils.

Our ambition is to establish Newcastle University as a centre of expertise in digital technologies and to ensure that our research is translated into real world benefits. With this in mind we've established two engagement and training initiatives, the Cloud Innovation Centre and the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Cloud Computing for Big Data.

We're also a key component to the National Innovation Centre for Data, a team focussed on delivering key technical and practical data skills into organisations, improving competitiveness and grow your business. Businesses can co-locate with the National Innovation Centre for Data either for project work or as tenants.

We're collaborating with a range of local, national and international industry and public sector organisations. This is to facilitate and accelerate innovative activities and to create a skills pipeline of highly talented individuals.
