The Digital Institute worked, as part of a team led by NBS, on an Innovate UK initiative to explore the development of the Digital Toolkit for Building Information Modelling (BIM).

The team also included BIM Academy, BDP, Laing O’Rourke, and Microsoft. It conducted an in-depth research programme with the industry to test its proposals for a free-to-use digital BIM tool. The tool will capture, validate and store information based on the publicly available level 2 BIM standards.

In particular, the Digital Institute worked with BIM Academy and Microsoft to produce working prototypes of a cloud computing demonstration harness and an IFC verification tool. The project was supported by the BIM Task Group and Department for Business, Innovation and Skills. It is seen as a vital part of the global race to develop an open standard and supporting tools for BIM adoption.

The work was well received nationally, helping the NBS led consortium to win the £1 million Innovate UK contract. This enabled them to take the development of the free-to-use digital BIM tool forward.

The BIM toolkit has the potential to transform the procurement of buildings and infrastructure by defining and testing the BIM data required at each stage of the project.
