Our teaching focuses around training in cloud computing for 'big data'.
Skills in cloud computing and data analytics are in great demand in companies, regionally, nationally and internationally. Therefore, in 2014 a group from Computing Science and Mathematics & Statistics bid for, and were awarded, £5m to host the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) Centre for Doctoral Training in Cloud Computing for Big Data.
Augmented by funding from industry and the UK Digital Catapult, this covers 60 full PhD studentships from 2014-2022, with an intake of around 12 per year annually from 2014-2018.
We recruit excellent mathematics and computer science graduates, teach them advanced scalable computing and statistics for big data analytics for 7 months, after which they embark on their PhD topic. This allows them to focus on a real problem drawn from industry or academic researchers, and benefit from extended placements with external organisations.
