Applied Linguistics & Communication 1

Teaching, researching and improving human communication around the world.

The Applied Linguistics & Communication group at Newcastle University has an international reputation for teaching and research in a range of areas related to language in use and communication in applied contexts. We place emphasis on multidisciplinarity, empirically-driven theory advancement, and the impact of these advancements on real-world language and communication.

Our courses

We offer postgraduate teaching in the form of our MA in Applied Linguistics & TESOL, and our range of MAs in Cross-Cultural Communication. We also offer postgraduate research supervision in two different formats – the Integrated PhD in Educational and Applied Linguistics, and the PhD in Applied Linguistics. Our Masters programmes and Doctoral programmes have attracted hundreds of students in recent years, from well over 50 different countries.
Over the last decade, some of our students’ best work has been showcased in the Annual Review of ECLS (ARECLS) student journal, and the Annual ECLS PGR Conference.
