The impact of literacy beyond the print

Abstract: The cognitive impact of literacy acquisition goes well beyond learning to decode the print, and recent neurocognitive studies demonstrate that learning to read and write changes both functionally and structurally the human brain.

In this talk I will present some recent studies with pre-literate children, neo-literate children, and illiterate adults, showing a variety of unexpected effects derived from the lack of formal exposure to the print during schooling. Besides this, I will also provide evidence about the different skills that are developed by readers once this macro-ability has been learned and exercised, demonstrating that the way the context is (visually) analyzed changes dramatically with reading instruction. Finally, I’ll briefly discuss different reading instruction methods and offer evidence supporting the added value of some of these specific training methods.
