Sophie Maccormack

PGCE.

What subject did you train to teach?

Science.

Where are you currently working?

Churchill Community College.

How long have you been working there?

Since January 2020.

What is your role, have you taken on any additional responsibilities?

Teacher of Science and Year 7 Form Tutor!

Why did you choose to undertake your PGCE through / at Newcastle University?

I chose to undertake my PGCE at Newcastle University because having already completed my undergraduate degree here, I knew the teaching and support would be first class. I also felt extremely comfortable and supported from the day of my interview and knew it was the right environment for me.

What did you most enjoy about the course?

Meeting other student teachers in the same position as me - you cannot underestimate how important those people are in your training year. I also really enjoyed learning activities which we could go on to use on a Friday.

How did you find making new friends while studying with us? Have you kept in touch with anyone?

Really easy - I am still in touch with everyone in our science PGCE whatsapp! I have made friends for life who I was so grateful to in my training year.

What did you enjoy about studying in Newcastle as a city?

It's the best city on Earth! Everything is within walking distance - and the bars/pubs are great.

What advice might you have for future student teachers?

Make friends - it's so nice to know that you're not the only one finding something difficult or feeling stressed. Don't put too much pressure on yourself as you will constantly be learning and don't be afraid to ask for help if you need it. Most importantly, enjoy it and embrace the opportunity!
