Originally from the South Coast of England, I completed undergraduate studies in French and Spanish with Lingustics, a Masters degree in Applied Linguistics, and a PhD in Second Language Acquisition and Bilingualism, all at the University of Southampton. During this time, I have also lived in Santiago, Chile as an exchange student, and Avignon, France where I taught English.
After my PhD study, I worked for the Vulnerable Native Grammars project into first language grammatical attrition, before coming to Newcastle as a Lecturer in Second Language Acquisition in September 2022.
I am interested in heritage language acquisition, L2 acquisition, and L1 attrition from a generative perspective. I typically work on the acquisition of Spanish and English by different groups.
Please note that I am not available to supervise PhD students
In my recent PhD project, I examined child heritage speakers of Spanish in the United Kingdom, investigating their production and comprehension of Spanish tense-aspect morphology. I have two further publications from this project in preparation.
I am currently developing a project exploring the phonology-morphology interface in L2 English.
I use linguistic and psycholinguistic methodologies in my research.
I teach various courses in Second Language Acquisition.
For undergraduate students, I teach the SLA part of SEL2086 - Introduction to Child and Adult Language Acquisition. I also teach SEL3430 Second Language Acquisition.
For Masters students, I teach the SLA component of SEL8687 - Language Acquisition and the module SEL8690 - Advanced Topics in Second Language Acquisition.
