Staff Profile

Dr Matthew Coneys

Research Associate

I completed a PhD in Italian Studies at the University of Warwick in 2017, having previously studied for a BA at the University of Cambridge and MA at UCL. I then held postdoctoral positions at the School of Advanced Study (London) and University of St Andrews before being awarded an MHRA Research Scholarship in 2018. I joined the School of English at Newcastle in August 2019 as a Research Associate, working on the Manuscripts after Print project led by Dr Aditi Nafde.

I am interested in late medieval and early modern pilgrimage and travel literature, particularly in Italian, and the history of the book. My PhD explored the reception of the Book of John Mandeville in Italy between the late fourteenth and mid-sixteenth centuries, revealing how it was read and refashioned by different social groups at a time of fundamental change for Europe's worldview.

I am currently a Research Associate working on the Manuscripts after Print project, led by Dr Aditi Nafde, which explores the impact of new technologies on the production, circulation and reading of older kinds of books. In addition to supporting the project's events and activities, I am investigating the material evolution of the travel account between 1450 and 1550 and the permeability between its manuscript, printed and oral forms.
