Studying English Language and Linguistics

We offer you the opportunity to undertake taught or research postgraduate studies, where you'll be supported by our expert staff and exposed to diverse perspectives. 

Our research was ranked 6th for power in the latest Research Excellence Framework (REF), with the majority of the output classified as world-leading or internationally excellent. 

We have five postgraduate degrees in Language and Linguistics, these are:

If you take our MPhil, PhD course you will carry out a major research project alongside supervisors who are experts in your field. Our Linguistics and English Language Integrated PhD combines taught modules with your own original research, and you'll develop knowledge and expertise of linguistics and English language. 

Our Linguistics MA is characterised by its flexibility and allows you to select your own pathway, while the Sociolinguistics course explores both the history and philosophy of linguistics and is designed to prepare you for doctoral study. 

The MLitt course is a Master's-level degree based around your own research interests on topics chosen in consultation with your supervisor.
