Poems from Xylography: Thomas Bewick and ekphrastic vantage points.

A new practice-led study of printing in the North East of England, 'Poems from Xylography: Thomas Bewick and ekphrastic vantage points' responds to the tail-piece wood engravings of eighteenth-century Northumberland engraver Thomas Bewick. My critical study asks how these archival encounters can inform my creative work and extend ekphrastic theory. I examine what the research reveals about connections between the poet and the artist as image makers for a free-thinking and democratic society, underpinned by Shelley’s assertion that ‘poets are the unacknowledged legislators of the world.’

This project is being undertaken with thanks to support from the Arts and Humanities Research Council, The Bewick Society and Newcastle University's partner institutions: Tyne and Wear Archives and The Wordsworth Trust.
