The School is home to a large group of experts in English language and the wider area of linguistics.

Studying English Language & Linguistics

We offer a range of undergraduate degrees in language and linguistics. These are offered both within the School and jointly with the School of Modern Languages.

Together with language and linguistics experts in School of Modern Languages and School of Education, Communication and Language Sciences, we form one of the largest concentrations of expertise in this field within the UK.

Research in English Language & Linguistics

In our teaching and research we address a range of topics to do with the structure and use of language, including:

  • syntax and semantics
  • phonology
  • sociolinguistics and discourse analysis
  • first and second language acquisition
  • historical linguistics
  • language evolution

We pay special attention to similarities and differences across languages.
