We hope you're looking forward to joining us and we welcome you to the first step in a rewarding learning journey set in a supportive environment providing access to state-of-the-art facilities.

Induction takes place during your first week here and our aim is to help you settle into university life as smoothly as possible through a tailored programme of activity.

A few things to note

Stage 1 students and Stage 2 Direct Entry Students: You will need to collect your Samsung tablet during the first week of teaching. We will provide further details of dates and times during Induction Week.

Please remember to bring along a copy of your qualification documents or certificates with you to University.

Do check our the University's pre-arrival pages which will provide you with some useful information regarding accommodation, University facilities to look out for, registering to ensure important things such as email and access to the Student Self Service Portal (S3P) are set up.

If you arrive the week before Freshers' Week and want to get a head start in meeting people and get involved in university life, our Students' Union would like to welcome you to their Early Arrivals Week. Starting on Monday 16 September 2019, you will have the opportunity to get involved in a wide range of activities and events.

Checklist

It is essential that you complete a number of activities by the end of induction week. You should make sure you complete each of these actions.

Complete your online registration

You must complete your online registration via the Student Self Service Portal (S3P). This is where you can request a Council Tax Certificate or a bank letter.

Collect your Smartcard

Your smartcard gives you access to the library, sports centre, other University facilities.

You can collect your Smartcard from the Hadrian Building during the main induction period or from the Robinson Library (Home/EU) or Student Services Helpdesk (international students) at other times.

The Hadrian Building is building number 4 on the campus map. It is located in the centre of the main campus.

Find out more about how to collect your Smartcard.

Access your University email and Blackboard

You should check your University email daily for updates relating to your studies.

It is also important to review the module and programme information provided on Blackboard. Find out how to get started with the University's IT services.

Check your programme timetable for teaching

Your timetable is available online.

Changes to the timetable may be necessary throughout the year. You should check the timetable web pages as they may vary on a weekly basis.

Visit the Robinson Library

You should familiarise yourself with the Philip Robinson Library and its resources as you will need to make use of these throughout your studies. The Robinson Library is number 35 on the campus map.

Attend your School induction activities

Refer to your induction timetables.

Register with a Doctor

Newcastle University is committed to encouraging all students to register with a Doctor upon arrival.

If, like most students, you spend more weeks of the year at your university address than your family's address, you are advised to register with a doctor near university as soon as possible.

The Register with a Doctor event during University registration/Freshers week will have University and NHS staff on hand to help with this process.

Non-native English speakers only: Complete the University English Language Assessment

You must complete the University English Language Assessment (UELA) or have exemption approved.

This is an important part of the registration process for non-native English speakers. It ensures that we can provide you with the appropriate level of English language support.
