Interest Groups
Interest Groups
There are several interest groups which span research groups, schools and faculties. Some groups are hosted within our School and others are jointly hosted with other schools and faculties. Some interest groups hold open to attend seminars.
The aim of these interest groups is the advancement of specific areas of knowledge and the cross fertilisation of ideas between staff and students with different fields of expertise.
ASL - Asynchronous Systems Labs
We provide a forum for research staff and students to present and discuss work on a wide range of topics related to the theory and applications of concurrent and distributed systems.
Meetings are organised by the School of Computing (Prof Maciej Koutny) and the School of Engineering (Prof Alex Yakovlev).
nanoLAB
nanoLAB is a designated research centre, specialising in nanoscience and technology. Students and staff from across all three Faculties bring a wealth of expertise and insights.
NEMIG: Newcastle Electromagnetics Interest Group
The Newcastle Electromagnetics Interest Group (NEMIG), for both students and staff, provides a vehicle for electromagnetics related discussion and research to reignite the subject in the city.
This follows on from a long heritage in Newcastle of pioneering electrical engineering that relied upon the subject, such as development of three phase power systems and high voltage turbo generators among many others.
We believe the great Oliver Heaviside, notable for popularising and transforming the work of James Clerk Maxwell and electrical engineering in general, first read electromagnetic theory in Newcastle after discovering Maxwell's treatise in the library.
The group enjoys visits from external speakers who present on their chosen aspect of electromagnetic theory. Please check out the events list below. The events have been highly stimulating and have generated great interest in the group from a number of avenues.
The group also meets regularly to discuss topics and future events. We welcome all to the group meetings and events from all Schools from undergraduates to Professors. So please feel free to join us.
