Description

Exploring techniques to encourage engagement and behaviour change

We will investigate novel consumer engagement and behaviour change techniques. Developed by GenGame, these techniques use mobile phone applications and gamification. They act as both a reward and an engagement method.

We will assess the effectiveness of these techniques in providing incentives to consumers to:

  • charge their ULEV (Ultra Low Emission Vehicle) using domestic chargers at times that benefit the electricity system
  • shift or change use of the Electric Highway provided by Ecotricity

We will provide a platform for sharing data about driving patterns and travel information plans. We will then use the data gathered from the mobile application data to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed techniques.

Modelling future markets

We will model the impact of potential future market scenarios which utilise the resources provided by V2G. This will build confidence in the ability of ULEVs to deliver electricity system services at scale, utilising the necessary power system simulation methods.

We will use smart grid laboratory facilities at Newcastle University. The facilities provide real-time network simulation capabilities. The laboratory has prior and extensive experience in electricity system simulation and evaluation.
