Retinal degenerative disorders are the primary cause of blindness in the developed world. In our ageing society, there is an increasing prevalence of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The condition affects 25% of over 75s. It causes loss of the high resolution central vision. This makes it difficult to recognise faces, read, and perform important daily tasks.

AMD can lead to a loss of confidence and mobility. This has a strong correlation with morbidity in the elderly.

In previous work, we have explored improvements in the quality of information transmitted through an imperfect retinal prosthesis. The €2.1M OptoNeuro project was one such undertaking. The same technology could support those with partial vision loss through advanced visual aid devices.

Image processing of visual scenes will enhance and improve recognition of key features. This will help user mobility and object recognition. Face recognition is a key social task difficult for patients with AMD. We have incorporated an electronic face recognition system which can give auditory feedback.

We tested concepts in advanced visual aid devices on patients with macular degeneration. We carried out two trials at the Western Eye Hospital in London.

We have developed a successful prototype and we are exploring commercialisation.
