ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

I am Research Associate at Newcastle University for the project: "Learning from earthquakes: Building Resilient Communities through Earthquake Reconnaissance, Response and Recovery".  Jointly project with Cambridge University and University College of London (UCL).This project is oriented to improve the understanding of earthquake impacts, response and recovery through targeted data gathering in earthquake reconnaissance missions and through associated research to better collect, interpret, exploit and disseminate these data. BACKGROUND PROFESSIONAL INTEREST

 

I born in Colombia. I worked in the public sector for almost seven years at the Institute of Risk Management and Climate Change (IDIGER) in Bogota, Colombia. Then I have been working on the academia for ten years at the University of Salzburg in Austria, UNIGIS Latin America (University of Salzburg in Austria and University San Francisco de Quito in Ecuador) and the National Research Center for Integrated Disaster Risk Management (CIGIDEN) in Chile. I worked also with NGO’s since 2016 for the Global Earthquake Model (GEM) Foundation in Italy and Caritas Switzerland in Colombia in topics related to social vulnerability and resilience due to earthquakes and climate change adaptation.

POSTGRADUATE MODULES

Online lecturer for the elective module: GIS, risk and disasters. The course was divided into six lessons: introduction, hazard, vulnerability, risk, preparedness and recovery. The objective of the course was to teach the students how to apply the GIS functionalities for hazard, vulnerability and risk assessment, as well as preparedness, emergency response,  pre-impact recovery planning and post-disaster recovery assessment.
